Governor-General
The current Governor-General of Belize is Her Excellency Dame Froyla Tzalam GCMG. She became Belize’s third Governor General on May 27, 2021. Dame Froyla is the first indigenous woman from the Americas and in the Commonwealth to be appointed Governor General.
The Governor-General of Belize is appointed by His Majesty The King on the advice of the Prime Minister within the monarchical system of Government provided by the Belize Constitution.

The Governor–General confers two types of honours and awards. The first is National Honours and Awards which are normally awarded around the 21st of September, Belize’s independence day. The Governor-General also conducts an investiture ceremony for recipients of the Order of the British Empire awarded on New Year’s Day and conferred when deemed expedient to do so.

Her Excellency Dr. Dame Minita Gordon
Dame Elmira Minita Gordon, GCMG, GCVO, D. Phil., was the first Governor-General of Belize from its independence in 1981 to 1993.
His Excellency Sir Colville Young
Sir Colville Norbert Young, GCMG, MBE, D. Phil., served as Belize’s second Governor-General from 1993 to 2021.
