About The Governor General
The current Governor-General of Belize is Her Excellency Dame Froyla Tzalam GCMG. She became Belize’s third Governor General on May 27, 2021. Dame Froyla is the first indigenous woman from the Americas and in the Commonwealth to be appointed Governor General.
The Governor-General of Belize is appointed by His Majesty The King on the advice of the Prime Minister within the monarchical system of Government provided by the Belize Constitution.
The Governor–General is the defacto Head of State in Jamaica as His Majesty has vested all executive authority in Belize to the Governor-General, who at her installation takes the Oath of Office as prescribed by the constitution to function in her stead.
The Governor General is appointed in accordance with Section 30 of the Belize Constitution, which states, “There shall be a Governor-General of Belize who shall be appointed by Her Majesty and shall hold office during Her Majesty’s pleasure and who shall be Her Majesty’s representative in Jamaica”.
