Mr. Mendez's Biography
His Excellency Mr. Daniel Mendez is the spouse of Dame Froyla Tzalam, Belize’s first Indigenous governor general and the 3rd governor general since Independence. He was born in Belize City on April 8, 1977.
Mr. Mendez is a risk and crisis researcher with an interest in issues of security, crisis, and disaster management in Belize and the Caribbean region. He holds a Master of Science Degree in Risk, Crisis, and Disaster Management from the University of Leicester and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Management Studies from the University of the West Indies.
He has collaborated in the development of several policies and programmes, including the “Protocol for the Integrated Protection of Children in Disaster Situations in Belize”, which has been adopted by the Caribbean Disaster Management Agency (CDEMA) and the Government of Belize; in the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) consultancy, “Development and Implementation of a Climate Resilience Curriculum Training Program for the Construction Sector in Belize”; and in the development of the “Joint Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Programme” for the Ministry of National Defence and Border Security.
He has co-published several articles in the International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction and the Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Natural Hazard Science in collaboration with the Avoidable Deaths Network. Mr. Mendez served as a commissioned officer in the Belize Defence Force, retiring at the rank of Captain.
