His Excellency Sir Colville Young
Sir Colville Norbert Young, GCMG, MBE, D. Phil., served as Belizes second Governor-General from 1993 to 2021. He was born on November 20, 1932. His education went from St. Michaels College in Belize City to the University of the West Indies, then to York University, where he received a doctoral degree in Linguistics.
In 1986 he was named the first President of the University College of Belize. He became the first Belizean to be awarded a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship in 1992. Sir Colville has always been creative, contributing largely to Belizes culture as a composer, arranger, conductor, author, and performing artist. His musical repertoire extends to some forty songs; among them is Misa Caribena, written in the Belizean/West Indian and Caribbean style.
He is credited as a founding member of Belizes first steel band. With a stated interest in promoting the development of Belizean music. Sir Colville has been active in facilitating instruments to create school bands. Sir Colville received his knighthood from Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II on her Royal visit to Belize in 1994. His publications include Literature and Education in Belize; Creole Proverbs of Belize; From One Caribbean Corner; Caribbean Corner Calling; and Pataki Full.
